A one-row finding, and the reason it is a whole page: nurse anaesthetists reading about Maryland loan repayment are usually told to look at the nursing tier.

What the table actually says

The Maryland Department of Health's loan repayment guidelines list awards by credential. The advanced-practice row is not a footnote to the physician row. It is the same number.

CredentialFull-time maxObligation
Physician (MD, DO)$100,0002 years
★★ APRN. CRNP, CNM, CRNA, CNS★★ $100,0002 years
RN, LPN$50,0002 years

★★ A certified registered nurse anaesthetist is named in the APRN category by the guidelines themselves. Not implied, not arguable by analogy. Named.

★ Why this gets missed

Because of how people search. A CRNA looking for help with student debt searches as a nurse, lands on nursing content, and finds the $50,000 RN and LPN tier. The $100,000 row is filed under a programme most coverage labels "physician loan repayment".

★ The gap between those two numbers is $50,000, which is the difference between a programme being worth a weekend of paperwork and being worth planning a job search around.

★ What it means for the mortgage, honestly

Less than you would hope, on the day you apply.

The award is paid in two full payments, one during each service-obligation year, conditional on service at an approved practice site. An underwriter looks at your balance and your monthly payment today. A pending award is not a reduction. How debt is counted.

What it does change is the five-year picture, and whether a lower-paying approved site is financially rational. That is a career question with a real number attached, which is more than most programmes offer.

★ The cap applies to you too

Verbatim: "Eligible individuals may be awarded up to two (2) MLRP service obligations per lifetime."

★ For a clinician who progressed RN to CRNP or CRNA, that matters. An obligation taken at the $50,000 nursing tier spends one of two. The cap counts obligations, not dollars. The full programme terms.

And the mortgage side

Physician mortgage programmes commonly extend beyond MD and DO, and advanced-practice credentials are sometimes in scope and sometimes not. That is a lender term, it changes, and a list published today would mislead someone in March. Why we do not publish one.

Send the credential and the contract and you get a current answer. Mike Certo, NMLS #260555. (480) 296-6513 · mcerto@cfmtg.com.

Frequently asked questions

Does Maryland's loan repayment programme cover CRNAs?

Yes. The Maryland Loan Repayment Programs guidelines name CRNA within the advanced practice registered nurse category alongside CRNP, CNM and CNS, and that category carries a $100,000 full-time maximum, the same as a physician holding an MD or DO.

How much more does an APRN get than an RN under MLARP?

$50,000 more at the full-time maximum. The APRN category is awarded up to $100,000 full-time while registered and licensed practical nurses are awarded up to $50,000, with both carrying a two-year service obligation.

Is the CRNA service obligation shorter than a physician's?

No. Both the physician and the APRN categories carry a two-year service obligation at an approved practice site, paid in two full payments, one during each service-obligation year.

Does a pending MLARP award help me qualify for a mortgage?

No. An underwriter reviews the balance and monthly payment on the day the file is assessed. MLARP pays in two instalments across the service obligation and is conditional on completing that service, so it changes the medium-term picture rather than today's debt.
